Token: Digital Grief Ecosystem
Graduate Work
If a person approaching the end of their life wants to pass on the full complexity of who they are, they are left with few options. Existing digital solutions offer crude AI avatars that misrepresent the deceased, or endless scrolling which has been shown to inhibit grieving.
Token is a return to the tradition of mourning, powered by modern technology: three tools to gather the artifacts of a life, build a memorial from what was real, and carry it with you. No synthetic avatars. No simulations. Just the whole person, preserved with care and delivered when it matters most.
Intimate, Earnest, Ancestral Visual Identity
The Victorians wore their grief in jewelry to keep mourning visible.
Token's identity draws from their history: centered layouts, linocut inspired icons, typographic-rich designs, and a palette pulled directly from mourning cards.
Gather & BuildKnowledge Base
The Token ecosystem is three individual tools, each built for a different moment in grief. The first two build a portrait of a person, filled with stories, recordings, and images.
Gather is a mobile estate-processing tool that collects the objects of a life and the stories behind them.
Build shapes these artifacts into a portrait and allows a user to leave their voice behind for their loved ones.
Token Wearable Interface
Remember is the wearable pendant, and the flagship of the system. Housed inside of a Victorian-inspired locket is a simple screen with a powerful database behind it.
Speak a memory into it, and the system matches what you remember with a memory from the knowledge base you built in the mobile and web interfaces.
Or, let the memories find you: when you return to a place you shared, or reach a date that mattered, the pendant can play a recorded message from your loved one.
